Steps for How to Install a Car Battery

  1. Start by turning off the engine and activating the parking brake. Pop the hood to locate the battery and remove any protective covering. With a wrench, loosen the nut connecting the black cable (negative) to the battery.
  2. After the nut is loosened, gently twist and pull the cable off. If the cable doesn’t pull off easily, don’t try to pry it off with another tool, as this can cause further damage to the battery.
  3. Repeat the steps for removing the cable on the red battery cable (positive).
  4. Locate the battery hold-down clamp holding the battery in its spot, then loosen and remove it.
  5. The battery should be ready to be removed, but be sure to carefully take it out using both hands. The battery is heavy and battery acid is dangerous.
  6. Inspect the battery tray and hold-down clamp for any corrosion. If there is, use a mixture of baking soda and water or a battery cleaning product to remove the corrosion.
  7. Using a wire brush and a cleaning solution, also ensure there is no corrosion on the battery cable connectors.
  8. Now, the new battery is ready to be installed. Carefully place the new battery in the battery tray and attach the hold-down clamp.
  9. For further protection and extended battery life, spray an anti-corrosion solution on the positive and negative terminals of the battery before reattaching the cables.
  10. Reattach the battery cable to the terminals by first connecting the red (positive) cable, then the black (negative) cable.
  11. Ensure that the cables are properly tightened so the battery is secure and doesn’t move.
  12. Replace the battery cover, close the hood, and start your vehicle
