How to Get the Fastest Electric Car Charging Time

Skyrocketing gas prices have many Maple Shade drivers making the switch to electric cars. Whether you’re thinking about buying a plug-in hybrid vehicle or a fully electric car, charging time and charging methods are likely topics of research for you. The average charge time for an electric car can take around half an hour for a mostly full charge to over 24 hours, depending on which method you use. Let’s take a closer look at how the charging method impacts how long it takes to charge the vehicle.

Charging Time is Determined by the Method of Charging

By far, the fastest means of charging your vehicle is with a fast-charging public DC charging station. Most electric cars will get a mostly full charge in under an hour at these stations. The slowest method is the Level 1, or 120V, home charging, sometimes taking up to 24 hours to achieve a full charge. That’s not good for busy Marlton drivers. However, the purchase of a Level 2 home charging station can speed things up significantly. While not nearly as fast as a fast DC public station, it’s much quicker than using an existing outlet in your house. Here’s how the charge times break down:

Electric Car Charging Time by Charger

Public – Fast DC Charging

  • Less than 50 KW per hour
  • Average charge time for an electric car – up to 80% charge in 36 minutes

Public – Basic AC Charging (240V)

  • Up to 7.4 KW per hour
  • Average charge time for an electric car – 20% per hour

Home – Level 1 Home AC Charging (120V)

  • Less than 2 KW per hour
  • Average electric car charging time – 2% per hour

Home – Level 2 Home AC Charging (240V)

  • Up to 7.4 KW per hour
  • Average electric car charging time – 20% per hour
